Dell unveils tablet PC that also makes calls

Dell Inc. will begin taking orders from select customers for its new Android-based tablet device Thursday.

Everyone else can order the Dell Streak starting Friday, and the device will begin shipping by the end of the week, company officials said.

With a 5-inch display, built-in Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, the Streak seemingly straddles the divide between smart phones and tablet devices such as Apple’s iPad. The device can make calls and features a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera and 2 gigabytes of internal storage.

“Its unique size will help people discover new ways to enjoy the Web, connect with friends and navigate their lives,” said Ron Garriques , president of Dell Communication Solutions.

Dell is also looking at other possible screen sizes for the Streak, but no others were announced Tuesday.

The 5-inch display is about the smallest size in which a full HTML page can be viewed, yet it’s still a pocket-size device that can make calls, Dell spokesman Matt Parretta said.

“We wanted to create an experience in a mobile device that showcases the Web in the way that the publishers intended,” he said.

AT&T will be the U.S. carrier for the device, which is also being released in France and the United Kingdom. It’s available for $299.99 with a new two-year AT&T contract and $549.99 without.

Although there are smart phones currently on the market with 4-inch displays, the larger Streak gives Dell a chance to “develop a space that is somewhat sheltered from the iPad,” said analyst Roger Kay with Endpoint Technologies Associates.

“Given product introductions at the moment, it gives Dell kind of an open space that’s not covered that well,” Kay said.

The launch is “on the riskier end of things,” he said, but he added that it’s important for Dell to make those kinds of moves on the consumer end of its business.

Dell has also announced its own smart phone, the Aero, but it hasn’t yet appeared in stores in the U.S.

Google Chrome Canary Build

You will be able to install it along with your regular chrome version. Canary builds can be installed without overwriting a regular Chrome build. That means you can install both a Canary build and a regular build that could be on the stable, beta or dev channel.
The Canary build is only available for Windows, it’s “installed to a different path, gets updated separately, and runs side by side with an existing stable/beta/dev installation”. Google says that the Canary build will usually be the same as the dev build. “Sometimes if necessary, we may push additional updates on Canary build so its version is higher than dev.”

“The canary usually updates more frequently than the Dev channel (higher risk
of bustage), and we’re working on making it update as often as we have
successful nightly builds. When something doesn’t work on the canary, I can
just fall back to my Beta Google Chrome,” says Mark Larson, from the Chrome team.

Now that Google Chrome synchronizes bookmarks, settings and it will also synchronize extensions, passwords, browser history, it doesn’t even matter that the two builds use separate profiles. Unfortunately, you can’t make Chrome Canary your default browser. Google’s explanation that it’s “a secondary installation of Google Chrome” doesn’t make any sense.

SKype iPhone Update – multitasking & no additional charges for calling over 3G

Today Skype announced that they have updated its iPhone application, making it compatible with iOS 4.

This means you can receive Skype calls while other apps are running, even when your iPhone is locked. And during a call, you can keep the conversation going while you switch to another task, such as checking a movie listing or reading an email. We’ve also updated the app’s graphics to support iPhone 4’s Retina Display.

The free communication app, which was originally released back in March of 2009, can now be run in the background thanks to iOS 4 multitasking capabilities. The 2.0.1 update means that not only can calls be made over 3G, but you can also receive Skype calls and instant messages while running any other application.

The application will continue to work and deliver calls even when your device is locked. Skype also detailed that, when in a call, a user can switch out to any other application and the call will continue. Of course, these multitasking changes will only work on the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS

Mozilla, the company behind the world’s second most-popular browser, writes this morning that it is “happy to announce that the wait is over.” Firefox, its open-source entry into the browser market, has made its way onto the iPhone and iPod Touch. Before you get too excited, it’s not as a browser, but as a companion to Firefox on your desktop, giving you mobile access to all of the details normally saved at home

Firefox Home works with the free Firefox add-on Firefox Sync, and brings all the details from your desktop to your iPhone or iPod Touch. It has all of your bookmarks, your browsing history and even the tabs that are currently open on your desktop browser. The app also has an “Awesome Bar”, just as in Firefox, which tries to predict what you are looking for while you type.

If you don’t have Firefox Sync already installed, the first thing that Firefox Home does is to send you a quick email with the four simple steps to get going.

Let’s be honest, though. Everyone wishes for their favorite browser, whether Firefox or Chrome or Opera, to make it on to their mobile platform, but does it every really replicate the desktop experience and fulfill their desires? We like Firefox on the desktop for its extensibility, but this isn’t the sort of functionality we’re likely to see, were we ever to get Firefox on the iPhone. And as we saw with Opera for the iPhone, the simple fact that it couldn’t be made to act as the default browser put it on a second tier status from the get go.

So, for now, we say stop lamenting the fact that this isn’t a fully functional Firefox browser and enjoy the ability to quickly access everything you’ve done at home while you’re on the go.
